Introducing Laïka

I never planned on having a Pit Bull. Last year, when Josie and I got Scarlett, we thought she was all we could handle. She begged to differ. She's a bouncing ball of energy (as all boxers are), but she's also very obedient. Thing is, she gets lonely when she's at home during the day. When I'm working, she can spend hours brooding, awaiting my lunch break so that we can hit the park. That makes it difficult for the busier days to make her flush her overload of energy.

Scarlett's favorite friends are Pit Bulls. They are energetic and athletic enough to follow her rhythm and they are also more serious. They can lead the play when Scarlett is going to be all over the place. Since our little boxerlady is a dog-dog (opposite to human-dog, that dig humans more than other dogs), we thought of buying her a Pit Bull companion. We thought of getting a puppy first, but when Laïka showed up at the park with her foster care owner, we knew we had a winner.

Laïka is calm, rather submissive and plays with Scarlett really well. On two different meetings, I saw them put each other on their back without growling, teeth or anything. She's a good dog. Prior to her foster adoption, some asshole tied her to a post and abandoned her with a bowl of water only. She remained there for several days before getting picked up and brought to the SPA. According to them, she was used for breeding and left to die. I am glad to give her a second chance and am confident that she will get along well with Scarlett.

Oh and today I have 31 RSS suscribers, which is a record. As a token of my appreciation to my readers, here's a video of a Pit Bull and a baby.

  1. Hi Ben,
OMG! I absolutely love this picture of Laika. She's adorable! Look at that pose, that face ;) She's a winner alright. Kudos to you and Josie for giving her a second chance. I'm glad Scarlett has a companion now. I was going to reprimand you if you bought a puppy. A lot of them come from puppy mills which are puppy factories where the mothers die or get cancer from having multiple births. Adopted dogs are VERY grateful and they show you how grateful they are. My hubby volunteers at the local SPCA and he tells me these dogs are just happy to have human contact. So congrats on your new baby! I'm proud of you for giving her a loving home. Can you tell I'm a sucker for dogs?

  2. It's OK, I'm a sucker for dogs too. Pit Bulls have particularly suffered a streak of deplorable incident due to improper handling. I thought about volunteering to the SPCA also, but I'm scared I will cry every time I step in there.

Laïka is going to be our little way to show that dog adoption works. We already took the arrangements, but we're waiting until after the trip since she's got transferred homes already, we don't want to shake her around too much !
