You will press play and then hate me. Carly Simon's YOU'RE SO VAIN is the biggest earworm and Marilyn Manson is one of the best cover artists I know. Not that his own stuff isn't good because it totally is, but he's extremely talented at reappropriating other people's music and lyrics and giving it a new dimension. If you're not 100% convinced, try also his I PUT A SPELL ON YOU or even YOU SPIN ME ROUND. Part of this new cover's drawing power still lies in the Carly Simon's original arrangements, but Manson gives it a new polish it didn't have. Oh yeah and can you hear Johnny Depp sing? I'm not sure I can. Meanwhile, enjoy and hate me for the rest of this week.
Marilyn Manson ft. Johnny Depp - YOU'RE SO VAIN
You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?
You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?
Well, I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not, you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and

I agree that Marilyn Manson's covers are great. My favs are Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode and Sweet Dreams by Eurytmics. It was insane when he (Marilyn) was blamed for the Columbine massacre.
Cold As Heaven
Oh yeah, Personal Jesus was a great one. Johnny Cash did a cover too. Looking back, I'm not surprised Manson was blamed for Columbine. Nobody liked to take responsibility when something bad happens. He was just at the peak of his celebrity at the wrong time. He talks about how bad it shook him in interview.
Totally agree, he really knows how to cover a song. His Sweet Dreams is one of my wife's regulars at Korea's many kareoke rooms. Now that's a sight to see. I also like his cover of Suicide is Painless.
No I can't hear Johnny Depp, either.
I didn't know the Suicide is Painless one, Chris. Listening to it now. Awesome, thanks!
Someone already mentioned this but Sweet Dreams is wonderful by him! I think it matches the song better, actually. Someone twisted but enjoys the hell out of it even though they shouldn't.
Marilyn Manson is extremely talented and quite intelligent. I just recently rewatched his interview on the O'Reilly Factor and am still surprised at how civil and intelligent he was. It gave me the biggest insight into his persona (which is totally crafted).
EARWORM! Ooooh no! I agree with Michael Offut. The MM persona is really a kind of performance art.
Hey Anne! Long time no talk! How are you?
I agree with you that its totally crafted. Many artists have a persona though. It's just that not everybody is as earnest about it as Manson is.
I had this song in my head for a whole day last week! Imagine me, walking around, suddenly blurting out for no apparent reason, "THEY WERE CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE! CLOUDS IN MY COFFFFFEEEEE!"
I was singing this exact same part last Monday at the office, CLOOOOOOUDS IN MAH COFFEEEEEEEEEH CLOOOOOOOOOOOUDSIN MY HAH COFFEE. Goddamn earworm this is,.
Yes, I've heard the Johnny Cash cover, which was good too.
The Columbine thing was insane, the way they blamed MM, while NRA played non-guilty. We lived in Denver about the time when it happened. I've been to one of these gun shows myself, part of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver. Crazy. Did you see the movie by Michael Moore?
Cold As Heaven
Johnny Depp doesn't sing, he did the guitar in the song
